Adapting to Change: COVID-19 Response
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program demonstrated remarkable flexibility and adaptability in assisting newcomers. The Newcomer Peer Leaders (NPLs) played a crucial role by customizing their support to meet individual needs, recognizing the various challenges brought about by new work schedules, online learning, and childcare arrangements. In response to the need for privacy on sensitive topics like finances and child welfare, group sessions were temporarily paused.
In going above and beyond, NPLs extended their support beyond regular hours, including evenings and weekends, ensuring accessibility for those facing time constraints. To cater to individuals without online access, in-person sessions were provided, adhering to safety measures. The program's resilience and commitment shine through its dedication to delivering personalized, easily accessible, and timely support to newcomer women amid the unique challenges posed by the global pandemic.
Skills-Based Support:
Participants highlight the importance of workshops showcasing their capabilities, particularly in adapting to online activities independently. The newfound skills empower them, bridging generational gaps and boosting confidence in navigating digital platforms.
I am so happy that at least I am able to do some online things by myself. My children
were surprised when I went to you-tube and played their song. I surprised them by
getting it through my cell phone and playing it on the TV screen when all the family
members were present. I am so happy to play the Congolese songs I like without
bothering anyone. I am quite happy
My children tried to show me but I am too slow they get frustrated. They treat me like I
will not know. Now I am very happy to comfortably go online by myself. When I want to
check the weather or grocery store hours, I do not ask them. They were surprised to
realize how much I have known
Comfortability and Safety in Sessions:
The NPLs' approachable nature creates a comfortable space for participants, fostering open dialogue and a sense of community. The safe, inclusive environment enables women to express themselves freely, building friendships and mutual respect.
… they [NPL] taught and gave us a chance to express our ideas and thoughts in every
step of the way
We got a chance to ask questions and we were explained in detail where we had not
understood properly
… we took turns speaking and everyone got the chance to say something
NPL Receptivity and Group Dynamics:
The receptiveness of NPLs plays a crucial role in participants' identification and engagement. Small group dynamics enhance inclusivity, and participants emphasize the need for more consistent and frequent workshops, recognizing the importance of virtual participation skills.
The great thing about these workshops is that they are focusing on our needs. That is why I
feel safe. I feel that I have a group to reach out to when needed which makes me feel safe
Group-Based Structure and Friendship:
The informal and needs-focused workshop structure fosters friendship among participants, creating a supportive group dynamic. Women feel secure in reaching out to this network when needed, emphasizing the significance of tailored support.
